  The history of Bodegas Williams & Humbert dates back to 1870. The founder, a young enterprising Englishman named Alexander Williams, decided to leave his country behind and take up residence in Jerez to work in a winemaking firm. There he learnt about the production process of sherry, a product he had already enjoyed in Britain.
 Alexander’s modest salary and the fact that he had married Anny Humbert, a local woman of England ancestry, led the young man to start his own professional initiative. This brought on the founding of Williams & Humbert in 1877 after Alexander had formed a partnership with his brother-in-law, Arthur Humbert. Months later they would receive their first order from London – two half-casks of fino sherry.
Not many years afterwards, the firm gained leadership of the export market for sherry wine.
The small building they had shared at the beginning had now become a series of large installations and hectares of vineyards. This is how Williams & Humbert started a business that is still thriving 128 years later, without having imagined then that their names would give recognition and prestige to one of Jerez’s most important wineries. Today the spirit of dedication and innovation that the founders instilled in the company remains strong a century later.
 Now Williams & Humbert sell their products to over 80 countries, they own one of Europe’s largest ageing facilities, many of their brands are part of Jerez´s history and they turn over more than €50 million a year.
The owners, the Medina family, have carried on a business that promises to last. Their recent arrival at Williams & Humbert upon acquiring 100% of the company’s shares, is a clear indication of a present with commitment and a promising future. |
